Bun in the Oven

Here is the logo for a project I developed last quarter. I had to write a business plan for a retail business of my choice. I developed a plan for a maternity and children's boutique called Bun in the Oven. I made this logo on Inkscape- a free online program that is similar to Illustrator. The program is not to difficult to use but of course, it is different than Illustrator which I had already learned how to use!

Design Project

Last week I worked on a project for my CAD class. The assignment was to create a presentation board for the line we each began to develop. Later we will create our designs on the computer.

All these designs are mine, don't copy them!

So Fresh, Sew Green

The fashion show last weekend was a huge success! The show's theme was sustainability and there were four design categories, recycled fabrics, recycled products, organic fabrics, and naturals. This meant we had used clothes remade into beautiful runway pieces, pieces out of trash, organic clothing, and in the grand finale, a dress made from corn husks, leaves, and flowers. I created two looks for it both of them in the recycled products category. The first was a dress out of plastic bags ironed together. The second, a top out of plastic bags and a petal skirt out of phonebook pages. I have a photo of the second look and I will get the other photographs from the photographer as soon as possible!

Also, I have recently been using the website BurdaStyle. It is such a great resource and community for people who like to create things. There are free patterns and project tips. Find the projects I've made under the username rebekah lynn.

Child's Summer Dress

I have doing so much sewing lately! One of my most recent projects is a dress for a three and a half year old girl. This was the midterm project for my sewing class, everyone made clothing for a little girl my teacher knows through church who is in need of more clothing. I followed Simplicity pattern 3510. The pattern was pretty straight forward. All the tucks on the dress lined up without any problem. The only confusing part was the patch pockets. I used the Reader's Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing for instructions on rounded patch pockets. I am very pleased with how it came together!

Dorm Decor

Finally I though I'd post a few pictures of our room! It has looked like this for awhile but I never got around to taking and uploading photos. It was fun going to Ikea this last fall and picking out curtains and finding curtain rods and such. My desk and closet are on the left side of the room and my bed is the one that is higher. We put it up on risers so that there is space of the person below.

San Francisco and the Space Needle

I have been so amazingly busy! Over Memorial Day weekend I went on a giant road trip with about 100 other SPU women down to San Francisco. It was a service trip called Quest. On Friday we drove 18 hours in 19 cars, through the night, to San Francisco. There were several stops to use the restroom, switch drivers, eat some food, dance, etc. We finally arrived Saturday afternoon in SF. We ate lunch and had an hour or so to see what we wanted to see before we headed over to the Rescue Mission in the Tenderloin district. We spent about a day at the Tenderloin with everyone doing a variety of things- office work, cooking, organizing the donation closet, teaching Sunday school, and cleaning. We slept in the Rescue Mission on Saturday night. The most interesting thing that we did was bring meals to various apartment buildings in the district. In the apartments we went door to door offering free food and prayer to people. We also enjoyed In-N-Out while in California. A lot of people were very excited about that. Sunday night we stayed in a church gymnasium and headed back to school early Monday morning! It was quite the trip!
On a different not, this last Thursday night we had Ashton Hall Ball (the dorm where I live this year) in the Space Needle. It was a lot of fun!

Finally, in a week from Tuesday I will have completed my first year of college. So much is happening in such a short amount of time!

Beginning of the End and the End of the Beginning

That's pretty much where I am right now. I am in the last quarter of the year but it's only my first year of college. This quarter I'm keeping busy with Spanish, Texts and Contexts II: Medieval and Renaissance Culture (T&CII), Spreadsheets, Physics, and Intro to Family and Consumer Sciences. I'm excited for my Intro to FCS class (which is the only one I haven't had yet) because it is a class for my major and it is a prerequisite for other classes I want to take. I think that all my other classes pretty much explain what they are all about in the title. My Spanish class only has seven students in it, which my 'profesora' told us was the smallest class she has ever had. Usually a small class for that Spanish is about 15 students. Our T&CII professors seem very interesting and entertaining that that class will definitely be more interesting than it probably sounds. I know half the people in my Physics class so that should be partly fun at least. So far, there is a bright outlook for all my classes. Hopefully I haven't overdone it by taking five at once. The Spreadsheets class and the Intro to FCS class are only for half the quarter so even if it is a little busy at first it will get easier. I think it will be time to start the countdown to summer pretty soon though!

Countdown

The end of Winter Quarter quickly approaches and I couldn't be happier about that fact.  After Winter Quarter comes the beauty of Spring Quarter with spring break in between.  Then after my first Seattle spring I can enjoy a San Diego summer.  Tomorrow I register for my next classes, hopefully I can get the ones I want/need.  Today I gave a very persuasive speech on why students should use ratemyprofessors.com.  It can be a good resource for college students who want to avoid classes with bad professors, like professors who are not helpful, do not teach well, or any number of things.  There is a website for high school teachers as well but there is not as much flexibility in choosing classes in high school, especially not in small private Christian high schools like I attended.  And of course, there is no flexibility in choosing teachers if you are homeschooled but in that case hopefully you like your teacher because you'll have more problems then not enjoying class if you don't.

Lockdown

I was sitting in class; watching the clock because class ends at 10:50 and I have to change and be at work by 11.  Right as our professor was telling his final point for the day about the new military technology used in the Peloponnesian War, someone bursts through the door say that they were told to go inside a classroom because we were in lockdown.  Our professor welcomed the newcomers and the others that followed and continued teaching.  He still had all of us there together so why not keep learning?  Meanwhile, our other professor (we have two) left the room.  It wasn't until several minutes later that I received an alert text that let us know that there was a bank robbery on campus.  The assailant was about 35, male, wearing faded blue jeans, and heading towards campus.  When we found out that the lockdown was real, we closed the blinds and kept learning!  Then another professor who had "sought shelter" in our classroom taught us about modern poetry.  A little while later we got an "all clear" text and I went to work.  It was a very interesting 25 minute lockdown, albeit unconventional and nothing like the lockdown drills that I'd been part of in the past.

Bountiful Busyness

Well, the title may not make too much sense.  Bountiful has such positive connotations and that contrasts with the 'busyness' connotations.  Bountiful though is a wonderful Thanksgiving time word and so I needed to use it to alliterate with busyness.
Yes, I am busy right now and it is exciting but mostly overwhelming.  You see, homework interferes unpleasantly with important things like socializing and sleep and events but somehow it all fits in (actually not all, but the most important things).  In order to accomplish this I have utilized our library facilities, coffee, and my alarm clock.  Being busy definitely has a positive side- it helps time go faster for things I'm looking forward to- eg. Thanksgiving and Christmas break.
I plan on putting some pictures up of the latest rearrangement of our room.  I think it is the best so far (it's our third floor plan).  If you have any questions, comments, etc. about my college experience so far let me know somehow and maybe I"ll blog about it.  It's hard to know what my huge fanbase actually wants to hear about.

Fabulously Fall

It is beautiful here!  There are so many trees that changed colors, the leaves fell off, and well...a picture speaks a thousand words; so check it out.  This is last Sunday, in the front of campus.

Birthday Love

First, thank you all for making my birthday so wonderful!  I love getting mail and as you can see for yourself in the picture I got a lot of beautiful cards and notes in the mail from you.  I put them all up on the inside of my cabinet.  My friends sang to me in the cafeteria too and then on Saturday we went shopping downtown.  It was a little strange to be away from home for my birthday but it was still a very good day.  Other than that life has been pretty normal- school, work, and a little bit of sleep here and there.

O yes, I voted!   That's about all I can say about that, now I can only await the election results and watch the polls on our free tv.

Bonding Time!

Tonight we have Fusion which is basically every amazing thing rolled into one event.  Actually not exactly, it's really just where each floor performs something in the main square.  Beforehand we eat together as a floor and after we do floor traditions... which should be ridiculously fun or embarrassing (whatever we make of it).  We are doing a dance for our performance and we have been practicing it the last two nights and still have one more practice till showtime.  If I could describe it in one word I would just say, "fantastic" or "exceptional" or "wonderful."  So good thing I can use more than one word to describe it.

I'm leaving...

Now that I am soon to begin college, I realized it was time to also to begin my own blog. This is largely thanks to the suggestion from Josh. So, hopefully I can keep track of my whole experience of living in the big city of Seattle and being far far away from home. And it also means all of you concerned for my welfare (and curious about what I'm up to) can try to check up on me by reading this. I depart in about two days and am very ready to go, once I finish the ominous task of boxing up my possessions and saying goodbye to everyone until Christmas time. Unless of course you come and visit me.
